Tools for Working with Transgender and Non-Binary Singers

The voice is an essential part of personal expression, and for transgender and non-binary individuals, vocal training presents unique challenges and opportunities. This workshop will explore the practical tools and strategies that voice professionals can use when working with transgender and non-binary singers, helping them navigate the intersection of vocal health, artistic goals, and gender identity.
Transgender and non-binary singers often seek to adjust their vocal quality—whether through changes in pitch, resonance, or timbre—to align with their gender expression. These modifications may be influenced by factors such as hormone therapy, which affects vocal fold structure, or by the individual’s personal desires for their voice. It’s essential for voice professionals to understand these dynamics to offer effective and supportive training.
This workshop will provide voice teachers, speech-language pathologists, and vocal health professionals with tools for assessing and working with transgender and non-binary singers. Topics will include vocal assessment techniques, creating a customized vocal training plan, addressing vocal health considerations, and providing emotional support during the voice modification process. Emphasis will also be placed on fostering a positive, inclusive, and affirming environment in which singers can explore their voices freely.
By focusing on both the scientific and artistic aspects of working with transgender and non-binary singers, this presentation aims to equip voice professionals with the knowledge and practical tools to support these individuals in their vocal journey.
