Practice Makes Permanent: Utilizing Tenets from Motor Learning Theory to Inform More Efficient Practice Strategies
Background:
Motor Learning Theory (MLT) and related research into the cognitive processes underlying the automation of complex motor skills provide valuable insight for singers and voice teachers. Despite the central role of deliberate, efficient practice in skill acquisition, most singers receive little formal instruction in how to practice. Voice teachers, meanwhile, may not have the time or expertise in MLT to guide students in developing the metacognitive and strategic skills needed to habituate optimized technical behaviors.
Objective:
This workshop aims to equip participants with tools and confidence to incorporate MLT-informed practice strategies into their teaching. Attendees will learn to formulate, implement, and evaluate individualized practice plans that foster more efficient independent work and long-term technical consistency in their students.
Methodology:
The session will begin with a concise presentation establishing shared vocabulary and key concepts from Motor Learning Theory and cognition as they relate to voice pedagogy. The second portion will take the form of a masterclass: singers will present repertoire selections, after which the facilitator will identify a technical element that could benefit from targeted practice. The facilitator will then model how to formulate and integrate practice strategies directly within the lesson context.
Results / Expected Outcomes:
Participants will leave with a clear framework for applying principles of Motor Learning Theory to singing instruction. They will gain strategies for designing task-specific vocal exercises, guiding students in effective independent practice, and fostering self-awareness in the automation of new technical skills.
