Was that Right? The Value of Visual Feedback for Voice Training & Treatment
Throughout the world, voice teachers and therapists are confronted daily with that burning, universal question in every language: “Was that Right?” During our brief sessions in the studio and clinic, we are available to answer that question and help our students link the sound of their voice with the physical sensations in their bodies that are needed to achieve their vocal goals for the stage & life. But what about most of their practice that occurs in our absence? Visual acoustic feedback can not only provide credibility to the therapist during treatment, but also guidance to patients as they practice.
The objective of this workshop is to demonstrate the value of acoustic feedback as a visual bridge to correlate physiologic adjustments with the intended auditory perceptual goals, i.e., a bridge that connects “feeling” the voice with “hearing” the voice. Through hands-on group practice and individual coaching, vocal exercises exploring Pitch, Loudness, Brightness, and Clarity will be demonstrated with Estill Voiceprint™. This browser-based program provides real-time feedback on smart phones through laptops using fun, colorful, and intuitive widgets, such as a Brightness Thermometer and Clarity Ball, to visualize the invisible voice. Participants will discover how the displays and instant statistics on key vocal measures, such as Frequency (F0), Intensity (dB SPL), Brightness (dB power ratio), and Clarity (CPP), can enable more effective practice. Voice students, patients, teachers, and therapists will leave with tools to create structured exercises verified by visual acoustic feedback that will enhance motor learning and help answer that timeless question: “Was that right?”
