Using Heavy Metal Techniques to Improve Passaggio Management in Classical Singing.
This workshop will adapt ideas from the Complete Vocal Technique that are often used in training heavy metal singing and other popular styles, to passaggio execution in classical voices. Demonstrations will guide participants to use the CVT ideas of “metal”, “twang”, and “density,” as well as rough vocal effects like vestibular fold distortion, in ordered to open new pathways to passaggio stabilization. Two predetermined volunteers from my own studio will be attending the conference, making it easy to demonstrate the acquisition of target coordinations before moving on to audience members. Once the main ideas have been made clear using my students as initial models, volunteers will be elicited from the audience to try out some of the tools in the context of their own passaggi. The workshop hopes to demonstrate novel approaches to find smooth transitions in both the treble low passaggio and the baritone/tenor “cover” without losing strength in the singer’s formant cluster immediately in or above the transition points.
