An alternative consonant categorization when teaching exercises from the SVS perspective
Workshop Session 2026
Singing Voice specialists work with many singer and non-singer types, not to mention a variety of genres. IPA is a common tool used to aid singing in many languages for Western classically trained singers. The SVS needs to be equipped to work with a wide variety of training backgrounds, therefore, it is necessary to understand the basics of how breath is treated in different consonants. While IPA is a useful tool, many clients that have come for disordered voice training at the SSI have had no experience with IPA. The goal of the SSI is to facilitate health and wellness in an expedient manner with clear understanding of desired goals.
It is beneficial to take difficult concepts such as IPA or consonant categories, and reorganize them in an accurate but simpler categorization for use by those not familiar with IPA or Western classically trained methodology. This workshop will present an alternative for consonant categories
The purpose is for the SVS to be able to communicate with all those who walk through their door and to bring the ‘systems balance’ back into alignment so that the singer can access the instrument for his/her desire use with longevity.
