What’s Up Your Sleeve: International Panel to Manage Dysphonia

Objective
Management of dysphonia can vary depending on standard of care for that country. Some medical/surgical treatment options are not available in other countries. Clinician experiences can shape the course of therapy for both speakers and singers with dysphonia. This international panel of experts explores preferences for dysphonia management among laryngologists and speech/voice therapists.
Method
A combination of leading female healthcare providers – laryngologists and speech therapists – reveal their preferred management for 5 common laryngeal pathologies. Sample cases include vocal fold lesions, reflux and scar among patient population of singers, non-singer, adults and children.
Results
Panelists discuss their success and limitations for management of dysphonia among the common pathologies presented for performers vs. non-performers, children vs. adults.
Conclusions
The goal to restore excellent voice remains the same for healthcare providers internationally. The method to achieve that finite goal is variable due to provider training and access to traditional and non-traditional options. The medical/surgical pathways and therapy pathways can vary depending on governmental regulations, training, and clinical experience of the laryngologist and speech therapist. This international panel examines their individual and national best practice for management of 5 common laryngeal disorders.
