Moderator: Karuna Dewan, M.D., FACS,
Panelists: Sarah Quintana, M.S. CCC-SLP and Dr. Briana Sosenheimer M.M, D.A. and Mausumi Syamal M.D., M.S, FACS,
Introduction: Care of the singing voice presents unique demands at the interface of art, science and vocal-performance physiology. Voice-specializing clinical-care teams best serve this patient population through collaboration across professional settings by working closely with vocologists, singing teachers, vocal coaches and choir directors to serve singers in their own performance environment.
Objective: This panel discussion presents a framework for Interprofessional Practice (IPP) for care of the singing voice. In medical and academic settings, the IPP framework helps professionals learn about, from, and with colleagues from different specialties. Applied across both clinical and artistic domains, the IPP framework enhances the efficacy and specificity of laryngeal rehabilitation for the injured singer.
Methods / Format: The panel will bring together 3 experienced professionals— a laryngologist, voice, speech- pathologist and singing voice teacher. Each panelist offers perspective on their scope of practice and experience in care of the singing voice including: assessment; treatment; surgical/medical management; pedagogic considerations; and singing voice rehabilitation following injury. This will be followed by case‐vignettes with a facilitated moderated discussion and audience participation. Key topics include: the role of instrumental assessment; pathophysiology impacts on plan of care; genre-specific considerations and aligning therapeutic outcomes with performance-based goals.
Results / Anticipated Outcomes: This discussion is expected to identify members of an Interprofessional singing‐voice care team, highlight the nuances of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for vocal performers and propose an IPP framework to establish cross-institutional, multidisciplinary voice-care programs that integrate both art and science.
Conclusion: This panel outlines opportunities for Interprofessional Practice in the care of the singing voice, providing a framework for collaboration across clinical, academic and artistic settings.
