Quelling “Quotient” Quibbles: Characterizing, Contrasting, and Compelling Close Quotient

What if I told you one “weird trick” could control vocal gender, age, and fach presentation? What if it also deeply underpinned the contentious vocal commodity often referred to as “mix”? Glottal quotient behavior, specifically close quotient (CQ) here, can deeply inform presentation of these attributes, and more, in voice. Yet, few feel equipped to even measure perhaps one of the most objectively quantifiable variables of voice, let alone teach it. This workshop consists of three stages of CQ exploration. “Characterizing” will introduce participants to primary scientific tools used to directly quantify CQ (and glottal quotient in general), as well as easily-accessible secondary tools that the Scinguistics community is innovating to approximate CQ through tendencies in its spectral acoustic effects. This will include LIVE comparative demonstrations of electroglottographic (EGG), acoustical, and stroboscopic assessments/approximations of CQ. Additional consideration will be given to common lay and even academic discrepancies in quotient quantitation. “Contrasting” will discuss isolation of CQ from extricable glottal behaviors that may either imperfectly emulate acoustic qualities associated with CQ, exert extricable indirect mechanical/behavioral influence on CQ, or both. “Compelling” will discuss relatively isolated behavioral triggers for CQ modulation, attempting to minimize the conflations discussed in the “Contrasting” section of this workshop. This section will also include drills for both augmenting and diminishing CQ, as well as common pedagogical hurdles that may arise with these approaches. This workshop aims to impart the same confidence and agency with this powerful voice metric that Scinguistics has instilled in hundreds of voice enthusiasts over the years in our 13K+ community.
