Regulate to Resonate: Mental and Emotional Regulation For Vocal Coaches and Singers
Regulate to Resonate: Mental and Emotional Regulation for Vocal Coaches and Singers
Objective: The objective of this workshop is to equip vocal coaches and singers with evidence-based strategies framed through the Seligman (2012) PERMA model that enhance both psychological resilience and physiological performance. Interventions such as visualization, reframing, goal setting, mindful breathing, relationship building, and attentional awareness will present participants with practical tools to regulate mental and emotional states, reduce performance anxiety, reduce muscle tension, and foster expressive freedom. Ultimately, this workshop aims to empower attendees to integrate these techniques into vocal practice and pedagogy and a flourishing lifestyle that can impact desirable outcomes on and off stage.
This workshop outlines evidence-based strategies that strengthen both the psychological and physiological dimensions of vocal performance through the lens of the PERMA model. Williams (2025) conducted a qualitative descriptive study with 9 professional soul singers and emphasizes the critical link between emotional regulation, mental focus, physiological relaxation, and consistent vocal occupation for positive performance outcomes. Participants will learn practical interventions that includes a PERMA model lens (Seligman, 2012) including visualization, reframing, goal setting, mindful breathing, relationship building, and attentional awareness. Studies show that these interventions can inform singers and coaches to better manage performance anxiety, cultivate resilience, and enhance expressive freedom through a life of flourishing on and off stage. Integration of these techniques into vocal training is a viable option to improve technical execution and creates conditions for authentic, resonant, and consistent performance outcomes. This 50-minute session blends applied Performance Psychology, vocal pedagogy, and experiential practice that can equip attendees with actionable methods to elevate overall wellness and understanding from both coaching and performance perspectives.
Conclusion: Integration of evidence-based strategies through the PERMA model bridges the gap between psychological wellness and vocal performance. Participants will leave with practical tools to enhance emotional regulation, mental focus, and overall well-being that fosters consistent and optimal vocal outcomes.
