ABCLOVE Voice Training: An Integrative Framework for Voice Rehabilitation

Objective:
ABCLOVE Voice Training is an eclectic, integrative approach to rehabilitating damaged or dysfunctional voices. Rather than following a linear process, it weaves together seven overlapping tenets—Awareness, Breathing, Counseling, Laryngeal manipulation, Oral resonance, Vocal function, and Elimination of inappropriate vocal habits. Developed in 2004, ABCLOVE was originally designed to support patients with head and neck cancer who were experiencing treatment-related side effects. Its application has since expanded to a wide range of voice disorders, including vocal nodules, polyps, unilateral vocal fold paralysis, vocal cord dysfunction, spasmodic dysphonia, and Parkinson’s disease, with consistently positive outcomes.
Methods:
This live, hands-on workshop will use experiential learning to demonstrate each ABCLOVE component. The presenter will introduce each tenet, provide a live demonstration, and invite attendees to practice. Applications will be tailored to specific dysphonias, highlighting challenges and solutions. Interactive discussion and case examples will guide participants in applying the framework and troubleshooting obstacles.
Results:
Following the workshop, participants will be equipped with a practical understanding of the seven ABCLOVE tenets and how to apply them with confidence across various dysphonias.
Conclusion:
Direct training under the guidance of the ABCLOVE developer provides a unique opportunity to master this structured yet flexible approach. Clinicians will be empowered to integrate ABCLOVE into their practice, enhancing outcomes for patients with diverse voice disorders.
