Empathy in Action: Practical Strategies for Voice Care Professionals
OBJECTIVE:
This workshop is designed to help voice professionals foster therapeutic and educational environments where empathy, though often poorly defined, plays a key role in reducing stress and improving outcomes. Implementing empathy effectively requires more than just understanding; it involves navigating complex challenges including time constraints and the need for clear boundaries. Our goal is to provide speech-language pathologists and singing voice teachers with hands-on strategies to integrate empathy into their clinical and teaching practices.
METHODS:
The workshop begins by exploring empathy within ourselves. How do our communication styles affect our collaborative relationships with patients and students? Participants will engage in discussions about the distinctions between cognitive empathy (the ability to understand another’s perspective) and emotional empathy (the capacity to share in another’s feelings). Through self-reflection, role-play, and group activities, attendees will practice using empathy to handle tough conversations, such as those about stress-related symptoms or mental health concerns in a thoughtful, effective way.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
1. Practice strategies for sensitive, empathetic communication when addressing difficult conversations, such as medically unexplainable symptoms or mental health concerns.
2. Understand the complexity of empathy and differentiate between cognitive and emotional empathy.
3. Develop actionable plans for incorporating empathy-driven care into clinical or studio settings, fostering positive, supportive atmospheres for voice rehabilitation and instruction.
