Watch what the SUPPORT is. Using UltraSound scan as a visual feedback and a proprioceptive tool for singing
Objective: to explain the support in singing lessons has never been easy. Having a visual feedback of how the abdominal muscles are participating can be very useful to improve the propioception of the singer. We are also going to observe Sharpay's angle, to see how the tension of the diaphragm can help us to have a prediction for the different behaviours and how the pelvic floor is participating in sung voice production.
Methods: after a short and fast review of the abdominal muscles, we are going to explain what support is using real-time a US machine connected via bluetooth to an iPad with different participants to see the different ways that each one uses them during singing.
Results: there are different abdominal behaviors depending on everyone. Having a physiological and right chronological contraction of the abdominal muscles should be: first, the transversus abdominis; then, internal oblique. It's possible that we observe different behaviours deppending of the resting muscle tonus of the diaphragm and how we modify this contractions priorizing pelvic floor contraction.
Conclusions: it is easy to observate the different abdominal muscles contracting during singing to explain what SUPPORT is. It deserves to pay attention to this, because evein if the subglottic pressure doesn't change, managing the intraabdominal pressure is so important to prevent injuries and not increasing other tensions.
