Developing and Keeping Optimal Professional Voice


Objective: To suggest everyday strategies to prevent voice disorders and to prime voice performance. This session involves review and application of effective techniques for optimizing professional voicing that fits a demanding routine. Vocal hygiene includes techniques to be applied before and after vocalization, as well as during actual vocal usage.

Method: This hands-on session draws on the extensive work and experience of voice experts as well as on evidence-based research. Preliminary comments will be followed by practical application of voice related practices that can be executed on-the-go. Participants will be encouraged to develop and share impressions regarding techniques implemented, leading to a productive discussion.

Results: Self-awareness, focused attention, and practice are warranted to secure optimal voicing. There is an increasing trend of interest in dynamic application of knowledge and skills suited to the typical routine of professional voice users. Tangible considerations regarding recommendations to maintain ideal voice usage should stimulate compliance.

Conclusions: Voicing efficacy associated with various approaches should be based on background knowledge and concrete experiences. This workshop involves concepts in voicing preparation using a dynamic approach including applied observation and participation. Attendees will be invited to consider adoption of a menu of functional techniques supporting ideal voice performance and preservation.
