A Systematic Review on the Short-Term and Long-Term Laryngeal Complications of COVID-19
Objective:
Short-term and long-term laryngeal complications of COVID-19 have not been reviewed comprehensively. Patient characteristics and extent of disease may inform how these complications develop.
Methods:
Following PRISMA guidelines, this review was registered on the PROSPERO database. Search terms were optimized by a librarian specializing in health science; and articles from the following databases were pooled: PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane, and Web of Science. Duplicates were removed, and a blinded review was conducted by at least three reviewers. All individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 from English-based literature with at least one reported laryngeal complication were included. Non-English-based literature, articles without patient data, as well as articles that were out of scope, were excluded. Patient demographics such as gender and age, co-morbidities, presenting symptoms, hospitalization, interventions, and short-term and long-term complications were recorded. Data analysis will be performed using SPSS software.
Results:
Results will be forthcoming.
Conclusion:
COVID-19 is associated with short-term and long-term laryngeal complications. Further research in this area is recommended to follow long-term effects.
