Benefitting from the Difference: Diction on the Resonant Path

Classical singers are admonished to extend their vowels and compact their consonants. Are they oil and water? Or a symbiotic team? This workshop considers mean airflow as it varies among an array of vowels and consonants, and the vocal tract choreography that both facilitates and results from those differences. Coarticulation that allows resonance to roll along has a lot to offer, from unstressed vibrato to improved intonation, from clarity of text to nuanced expressivity. Take home your own vowel dial, vocalises and a flipped concept of how language manages breath! All levels welcome, including volunteers from those observing—we’ll work with simple vocalise figures as well as repertoire in a variety of languages.
