Abstract | Objective: “Classical training” (which is as yet unspecified as to its pedagogical parameters) is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach for all voices in all styles. More than 30 years ago it was established through research published in the Journal of Voice that one person can sing in variety of different and appropriate vocal qualities in various styles of music and do so authentically and deliberately.
Methods: Because all styles of Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) are always electronically amplified, finding specific resonance is not a necessary ingredient. Control over the body is. Developing highly refined vocal function (spontaneous mechanical response) is a challenging activity that takes time. It is specific in execution and cannot be achieved through traditional training protocols.
Design: The session will present functional vocal exercises by working with two professional singers who can go from classical to pop to rock music authentically. Recognizing that different types of sounds in different kinds of styles require different approaches to singing training. At no time is any direct manipulation of the structures within the throat advised.
Results: Teaching singers to vary their vocal production should also allow them to keep their unique and identifiable vocal qualities in all styles of music, including classical literature.
Conclusions: The best way to achieving long-lasting, individualistic singing that allows a vocalist to sing authentically in any singing style or vocal expression is through style-based functional training. Questions and answers from the observers are welcome throughout the session.

PLEASE NOTE: The workshop I presented last year was an attempt to demonstrate this same information but the young singers (a soprano and a tenor) assigned to work with me were not highly skilled and I was unable to guide either of them to achieve the goals of the workshop. I would like to try again this year with singers who can demonstrate these changes effectively, who can discuss how they were trained and how they use this work in their careers. Thank you for your kind consideration of this request.
