Nasal Resistance (NR) Technique for Patients and Performers
Nasal Resistance (NR) Technique for Patients and Performers
Objective: The NR technique is an innovative therapeutic approach that enhances glottal adduction for efficient voice production. Inadequate glottal closure often leads to a breathy or weak voice seen in muscle tension dysphonia, presbyphonia, and unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Studies have shown that the NR Technique increases glottal contact quotient (CQ) and regulates vocal fold vibration, as measured by reduced jitter in voice production. These improvements have significant clinical applications for individuals experiencing age-related vocal fold atrophy (presbyphonia), vocal fold paralysis, and muscle tension dysphonia. NR technique has also shown to enhance resonance in singers that is perceptually identified by listeners. This hands-on workshop will focus on real-time demonstration of the NR Technique, allowing participants to experience the immediate effects.
Methods: The NR Technique involves partial blockage of the nostrils during humming exercises. This creates resistance to airflow, and induces the benefits of SOVTE and humming. It reduces jitter and enhances vocal fold contact, improving overall voice quality.
Workshop Protocol
During the workshop, participants will engage directly in the following exercises:
1. Participants will be seated/standing comfortably, and each will be asked to hum at a comfortable pitch and loudness.
2. The presenter will offer manual resistance by partially blocking the nostrils while participants maintain airflow and sound production.
3. Participants will experience the immediate effects of enhanced glottal adduction and will be guided through the process to demonstrate individualized results.
4. Interaction will be encouraged as participants provide feedback on how their voice changes with varying degrees of nasal resistance.
5. Real-time EGG/Spectra will be made available as evidence of this approach.
Conclusion
This workshop will provide participants with a clear understanding of how to apply the NR Technique to improve glottal closure and vocal quality. The hands-on approach ensures that attendees leave with practical knowledge and experience to integrate into their clinical or vocal training practices.
