Dead Voice: A Roadmap for Developing Opinion in the Voice
Objective: Both Singing and Acting Voice Teachers provide technique to create resonant, expressive, healthy and appropriate sounds for any given genre of music or theatre. Often, there arises an issue with the actor's/singer's beautiful, well-crafted sound that unfortunately expresses very little from an emotional standpoint. This workshop is meant to provide a short, practical roadmap of work designed to bring a sense of Opinion to any given voice.
Methods/Design: Participants will be presented with 4 very broad stages of developing a sense of Opinion in the voice with practical examples and exercises lightly explored by participants.
These 4 stages are:
– Proprioception: Developing a physical sense of sound production. (Tickle, Sub-Glottic Pressure, Vocal Weight, Size, etc.)
– Impulse Awareness: Common sounds such as various types of laughing, grunts, sighs, whoops, mimicry, etc.
– Connecting common vocal sounds to emotional impulse: Using impulsive sounds on specific types of words,
– Integration of speech/song and impulsive sound: Encouraging the integration of these sounds in reading/singing text. Giving permission, identifying opportunities, etc.
Results: Over time, students gain a greater level of physical sensation to intrinsically produced sound. Develop awareness of emotional impulses and how they are expressed. Connect the active usage of these sounds to speech and song.
Conclusions: Participants will receive a customizable roadmap and practical experience in applying the 4 broad stages of work.
