This workshop will introduce participants to the use of supraglottic sound sources, such as ventricular folds, arytenoids, and the cuneiforms as substitutional, supplementary, and compensatory sound sources for use in voice rehabilitation practice. The workshop will provide an overview into supraglottic phenotypes based on stroboscopic imaging, the different sounds, and pedagogical training tools. Participants will become familiar with a recent Supraglottic Sound Source Taxonomy and how to start detecting, categorising, demonstrating, and training supraglottic sounds for speech rehabilitation.

Specific patient populations, such as uni- and bilateral vocal fold paralysis and paresis patients or glottic cancer patients, are left with less-than-ideal anatomy to allow for easy phonation. Voice therapy targeting alternative sound sources, such as supraglottic sound sources, has recently been demonstrated to be identifiable, trainable, and efficient, however, not much published work has focused on systematically investigating these sounds nor practical training tools for them.

This workshop introduces the healthy and sustainable use of four supraglottic phenotypes:
• Ventricular fold phonation (Distortion)
• Cuneiform-on-epiglottis phonation (Growl)
• Aryepiglottic fold phonation (Grunt)
• Arytenoid-on-arytenoid phonation (Rattle)

The workshop also outlines the three main functions of supraglottic sound sources:
• Supplementary functions
• Substitutional functions
• Compensatory functions

The workshop draws on cutting edge research published in ASHA Perspectives, JVoice, and preprint publications to demonstrate endoscopic assessment, EGG-measures, acoustic analysis, auditory-perceptual assessment and longitudinal health tracking to demonstrate consistent recognition, vocal sustainability, and inter- and intra-participant reliability of the techniques taught in the workshop.
