Awareness in Action: Exploring Interoceptive and Exteroceptive Practices for Vocalists

This interactive workshop invites participants to engage in a hands-on exploration of interoceptive and exteroceptive practices as they relate to voice training and therapy. Through real-time demonstrations and guided exercises, attendees will learn to navigate and balance these sensory modalities to enhance vocal expression and self-awareness.

Workshop Structure:
Introduction (5 minutes): Brief overview of interoception and exteroception, including their relevance and value to vocal practice. Brief overview of current evidence to support these practices.
Warm-Up Exercises (10 minutes): Participants will be invited to engage in vocal warm-up tasks designed to target interoceptive and exteroceptive sensibilities.
Dual Awareness Practices (20 minutes): Guided exercises will facilitate the exploration of dual awareness. Participants will:
Practice shifting focus between internal sensations (e.g., breath movement, vibration in the body) and external stimuli (e.g., grounding in their feet, observing surroundings).
Work in pairs or small groups to apply these techniques, providing each other feedback on their experiences.
Live Demonstrations (10 minutes): Selected participants will share their experiences with dual awareness, while the facilitator offers tailored guidance and adjustments based on individual needs.
Reflection and Discussion (5 minutes): Participants will reflect on their experiences and discuss how to integrate these practices into their own work with singers, actors, or patients. Discussion of how this framework may foster agency and authentic expression in the voice studio or clinic.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the concepts of interoception and exteroception in the context of voice practice.
2. Experience hands-on techniques for cultivating dual awareness and apply these in real-time settings.
3. Gain insights on how to enhance vocal expression and self-identity through mindful sensory awareness.
