Music Theater in the Opera House

Classically trained vocalists can boost their career prospects and marketability by developing expertise in musical theater repertoire. Renowned opera companies, such as Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and Washington National Opera, incorporate musicals into their programming. Cultivating stylistic versatility is advantageous and can be achieved through targeted training. This workshop will demonstrate techniques to assist classically trained vocalists in preparing musical theater pieces for opera company and young artist auditions.

Structure:

Brief Introduction with reasons of focus, i.e.
· Opera productions of musicals
· Cross-Training
· Genre-fusion in Opera
· Differences in opera company productions of musicals vs theater company productions
· Work at Aspen Music Festival Opera Theater, universities, privately

Demonstrate my approaches as they apply to each classical vocalist on musical theater repertoire:
· Share thought process, observations
· Suggest aspects I would address to support their vocal performance for the performance practice/style
· Reason for selected aspects of performance to focus on
· Comparison of an approach for more classically oriented performance vs what I would focus on for theater production performance
· (T) Technical challenges – long-term goals and more immediate goals?
