Abstract Title

Are stressed professors at higher risk of voice disorders?

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this research was to determine the association between psychosocial factors (stress and sleep) with voice acoustic parameters among Colombian college professors during online classes in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Cross-sectional exploratory study in which fifty-eight professors from a Colombian public
university participated. Voice samples were acoustically analyzed, and sociodemographic information was collected using a questionnaire. Additionally, information on psychosocial factors (sleep quality, stress levels, and Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL)) was collected. Five acoustic parameters were calculated from the voice samples: Fundamental frequency (fo), fo standard deviation, jitter (%), shimmer (dB, %), sound pressure level (SPL), SPL standard deviation (SPL DE), and Harmonics-to-Noise Ratio (HNR). Results: Stress was statistically associated with low values of local jitter % (B-0.68), Shimmer %
(B-0.58), Shimmer dB (B-0.65), and VRQOL (B-2.719). Sleep was related to decreased values of the fo in the sustained vowel (B-0.20), and with the standard deviation of the fundamental frequency in connected speech (B-17.90). Conclusion: The relationship between psychosocial factors and voice acoustic parameters reflected a negative effect of stress and sleep quality on voice acoustic parameters. This association highlights the importance of considering holistic approaches, including psychosocial factors, in the promotion actions of vocal health among college teachers, even those teaching online.
