Background:
Patients with dysphonia seeking voice therapy may face several barriers such as geographic limitations, long waiting time, and financial constraints. To address these challenges, clinicians may adopt a range of service delivery models when delivering voice therapy. Although various service delivery models for voice therapy have been documented, there is no synthesized summary of this regard.
Objectives:
This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the known service delivery models in voice therapy and their effectiveness reported in the literature.
Method:
This scoping review (ScR) was conducted in accordance with Joanna Brings Institute methodology and reported according to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for a scoping review (PRISMA-ScR). The participation-concept-context framework was used to define the research question and develop the eligibility criteria. A research protocol was developed a priori and registered on Open Science Framework.
Result:
The electronic search identified 891 articles including scientific publications and grey literature. After duplicates were removed and resulted in 698 articles for screening. A manual search was also conducted on the reference lists of the selected articles. Full texts of 45 articles were assessed again based on the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. The PRISMA flowchart was used to present the process of article screening and selection. Data extracted from the selected articles, including the used service delivery models for voice therapy, their characteristics, and their effectiveness, were summarized and reported.
Conclusion:
The findings of this ScR advance understanding of the service delivery model for voice therapy which ultimately optimizes patient care. It also provides a foundation for future research to evaluate the effectiveness of different service delivery models for voice therapy.
