Abstract Title

What are voice intervention strategies? A theoretical framework about the delivery methods used in voice intervention.

Abstract

The word “strategy” etymologically origined in the greek words “stratos,” which refers to army, and “agein” meaning guide (Contreras, 2013). Despite the specificity of this initial meaning, the field of application of the term has diversified over time. Nevertheless, there is a common aspect among the different meanings: the presence of a deliberate and conscious set of guidelines that determine decisions in the future (Mintzberg, 1978). In the voice therapy/training field there is no general framework in which to position and direction the intervention actions.
Objective: The present study aims to propose a theoretical framework regarding therapeutic strategies employed in voice therapy and bring it into the treatment planning process.
Methods / Design: A qualitative critical review was conducted with a model-type approach. Purposive sampling was conducted to identify evidence and conceptual support for the model.
Results: Five strategies were identified that fall within the treatment planning framework: restoration strategies, adaptation strategies, support strategies, strengthening strategies, and accompaniment strategies. Their use is contextualized within the therapeutic process, taking into account the intervention aims and goals, the client and clinician roles, the available resources, and the decision-making process.
Conclusions: This proposal aims to be a tool in the therapeutic planning process, which should be understood as a flexible process, requiring constant analysis of its components.
