Abstract | The Italian style: “vibrato,” vowel and consonant pronunciation, and “voce piena” in contemporary pop repertoire
Technique and artistic interpretation of a song through PROEL Method Exercises
Mezzacapo I., Negri J. S.
Contemporary Italian pop songs is highly appreciated worldwide, due to important artists as Andrea Bocelli, Laura Pausini, Il Volo.
The artistic enrichment of the style incorporates elements bear traces of the Italian music history such as bel canto, songs from the Resistance, popular songwriter’s music. However, the way to teach traditional also has to evolve and incorporates new techniques.
The objective of this workshop is to show a practical approach to understand how to reproduce the characteristics and essence of the Italian pop song style in a non-traditional way. This includes understanding its artistic communication, characterized by frequent use of techniques like ‘vibrato,’ ‘voce piena’ in the upper register, precise pronunciation of vowels and consonants in accordance with the phonetic rules of the Italian language, and the interpretative methods conveyed through gestures and body language.
During this workshop, we offer a hands-on approach to collaboratively explore how to reproduce the Italian pop song in non-traditional way. We would use PROEL (Proprioceptive Elastic Method) to increase proprioception and sensations in the body and vocal tract.
Aims and practice for this workshop are as follows:
Listening and guided comprehension of the main stylistic traits, in a natural hearing or using specific filters to specifically hear each formant.
2. Making the voice “fly” by bringing the phonatory system to maximum lightness using exercises from PROEL such as unstable balance postures or resonance masks.
3. Practical application, individual and collective of the acquired knowledge to a well-known Italian song.
4. Repertoire recommendations.
