Abstract

Deep in the center of the singing body the functional reflexive core (FRC) spans from pelvic floor, to diaphragm, to the throat, all connected through relationships of fascia, muscle, pressure and motion. When this deep layer is well integrated, it creates suppleness in the singing body, is responsive to inputs and provides an important foundation for producing the voice with ease.

Through the lens of biotensegrity, we see the body as seamed together inside in a way such that every part impacts every other part. Your core is a part of everything you do, whether it is breathing, moving or singing. However, for many singers, the FRC is overridden by our physical and emotional tension patterns, the amount we sit everyday, movement deficits and all the ways our bodies have interpreted the things we've heard about what the body should be doing when we sing.

In this experiential workshop participants will use movement, breathing and vocalizing to discover and explore their own deep core, and how it connects to the voice. At the end participants will understand the components of the functional reflexive core, fascial connections that run from feet to throat and how to make assessments in their singing body. Participants will work with each other and on their own to explore 3 dimensional breathing, how the belly and pelvic floor engage and release in response to inhalation, resisted airflow, sound and movement. Throughout the workshop we will check in with our bodies and voices to see what connections we can make.
