Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this workshop is to expose participants to the development of vocal-conditioning programs for professional voice users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, vocal “deconditioning” became a meaningful concern as many professional voice users experienced decreased stamina and range, increased fatigue, and risked voice disorders as they returned to work. With limited time to redevelop their capacity, having access to a structured and personalized reconditioning programs may be beneficial to many.

Methods: Participants will be exposed to the CUIMC Voice and Swallowing Center “Broadway Vocal Reconditioning Program,” which has been used by multiple theatre companies in NYC to support a rapid, sustainable return to high level voice use. Essential components of such a program will be reviewed, including voice and breathing exercises, massage, scheduled rehearsal of repertoire, and mindfulness practice. Participants will then collaborate in small groups, to develop their own individualized programs in response to provided case studies, making decisions regarding a variety of components including exercise type and dose, rest and recovery periods, and recommended scheduled check-ins with their voice teaching, coaching and therapy resources.

Conclusions: Participants will gain experience and knowledge surrounding the development of structured reconditioning programs to the benefit of their clients – improving overall capacity and reducing risk of injury following a sustained break from vocal use.
