Abstract

Yodeling, from the German word, “Jodeln,” can be found historically in numerous musical and cultural traditions (e.g., Plantenga, 2004). It represents a fascinating and intricate vocal phenomenon with rapid, abrupt, and controlled alternations between lower pitches in Mode 1/chest and higher pitches in Mode 2/falsetto.

This workshop presentation delves into the art and science of yodeling, exploring its multifaceted nature as a means to facilitate registration outcomes in a variety of vocal styles. We will briefly discuss the underlying physiologic and acoustic mechanics of yodeling and quickly jump to practically applying this knowledge as we explore numerous yodeling exercises. These exercises aim to foster a deeper understanding of voice registration for singers of all stages and genres. We will end the workshop by exploring a short song cut that utilizes register switching. All attendees will be encouraged to actively participate as we will be singing for a majority of this workshop using a hybrid small and large group-voice class format.

Participants will gain an appreciation for the cultural richness and cross-genre adaptability of yodeling and leave with a variety of immediately useful register-switching tools to incorporate this unique technique into their own technical work, performance, and teaching. Join us for this entertaining workshop where we will immerse ourselves in the exciting world of yodeling!
