Getting Useful Feedback from a Machine; Mapping Register Limits, Overlap, Characteristic Qualities and Transitions.

Interactive VRP recording or voice mapping can offer the singer and the singing teacher, an objective representation of vocal status. The established maps for particular quality aspects of the voice, may instantly confirm, augment, or sometimes challenge the intuitive image build perceptually.
Evaluation of a VRP recording is not accomplished by comparing to a norm, as results are usually hard to predict and very individual. This does not mean that the resulting images are vague or variable. At the contrary, maps are generally very reproducible and identifiable and merely confirm how different and distinguishable individual voices can be.
The value of having assessed such a comprehensive representation of an individual voice is typically cashed in retrospect. With an earlier baseline recording in hand, the amount and direction of voice change, for instance as a result of voice training or clinical intervention, can be precisely traced and documented. Understandably, pre/post the same recording protocol should be applied.

In this workshop, we will shortly demonstrate the procedure of recording a baseline SRP and VRP. During these recordings, we will show some of the interactive visualising options available, and at the same time explain something about the hardware and software used.
There will not be enough time to demonstrate the effect of some intervention. Instead, we will spend time on (re)exploring the register transition area in more detail, and demonstrate how specific singing instructions, combined with the direct visual feedback of specific quality features, can be used to outline the register merits mentioned in the title.
