Abstract Title

VoTRIM: Vocal Tract Reset by Integrated Manipulation. Self Manual Treatment Skills for Singers

Abstract

Voice box not only has the function to emit voice but also to breathe and swallowing for
survive. Thereby, all the involved muscles are continually in use, and sometimes overloaded. For this
reason, the voice can be affected by many possible tensions that voice professional user needs to
release in order to have optimal vocal function.

Objective:
The goal of this workshop is to experiment different techniques and strategies to rebalance the vocal tract from both the neck and the oral cavity so that vocal users can acquire skills to perform their self-treatments. Through the use of manual therapy and PROEL (Proprioceptive Elastic Method), the different receptors of the skin and mucous membranes are stimulated through sensitive bombardment (heat, vibration, pressure, etc.). Thereby, self-treatment should develop better proprioception and improved motor control.

Methods:
We will visualize the structures that are manipulated through the muscular structure painted on a person and with a muscular model of the tongue. A completely practical dynamic will be used and seeing the effects before and after the use of the techniques. So after each exercise, a control will be done to review which of the techniques are more effective to each one, before passing to the next exercise.

Results:
In so doing this practical workshop, the assistants will learn by practicing how to balance the muscles related with voice, to talk with different types of receptors to provide awareness of the vocal tract. The singers benefit of a released tongue and larynx explaining that their sensations singing are improved in the way of easiness, comfort and less effort. The voice gets more projection, colour and brightness.

Conclusions:
Going to a physiotherapist or a SLP specialized in manual therapy is an option. However, not always have a specialist on hand. We propose that voice professional users should learn how to release their own tensions and facilitate optimal vocal conditions.
