Abstract Title

Cross-cultural adaptation of the Voice-related Experiences of Nonbinary Individuals – VENI to Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

Objective: To cross-culturally adapt the Voice-related Experiences of Nonbinary Individuals (VENI) to Brazilian Portuguese (BP).
Methods/Design: Cross-sectional design study (approved by the Research Ethics Committee #5’845’012). The process comprised five stages: a) Translation of the VENI instrument of the English to BP by a translator specialized in the construct and a non-specialist, both of whom were native BP speakers and fluent in English; b) Synthesis of the two translations by consensus realized by the authors; c) Back-translation by a translator specialized in the construct and a non-specialist, both of whom were native English speakers and fluent in BP; d) Analysis by an expert committee of five speech-language pathologists specializing in voice, and the development of the final version of the VENI in BP; e) Pre-test with 21 Nonbinary individuals, mean age of 30.71 years. The pre-test consisted of the application of the VENI in BP. The not apply option was added to the response key. Participants were instructed to check this option if the item did not apply to the target culture. The pre-test data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software and Binomial Test.
Results: In the translation stage, disagreements arose regarding the title, instructions, answer key, and 15 items of the VENI. In the back-translation stage, there were discrepancies in the format of 12 items and the content of four items of the VENI. The expert committee’s analysis led to changes in the title, instructions, one option in the answer key, and eight items to meet the equivalence criteria. In the pre-test, a significantly higher proportion of usual responses to the instrument was observed than the non-applicable option, a trend frequently seen in instrument adaptations.
Conclusions: The cross-cultural adaptation of VENI into BP was successful, resulting in the “Experiências relacionadas à Voz de Pessoas Não Binárias – VENI-Br.”
